New York, NY - More than a pedophile, but a psychological sadist. This explains how Darnell McNeill so persistently, and secretly, sexually molested Aaron Vargas from childhood well into adulthood. The most unusual connection ended with the murder – of McNeill.
On ABC’s 20/20, an exclusive interview with Vargas features analysis by Michael Welner M.D., Chairman of The Forensic Panel. In discussions with host Chris Cuomo, Dr. Welner teaches how this most peculiar case reflects the creative manipulation with which this sexual predator collected victims, how even an adult can remain improbably ensnared, and what parents can do to prevent it.
The town of Fort Bragg, CA was stunned when Aaron Vargas, then age 32, knocked on Darnell McNeill’s door then shot and killed him when he answered. Shockingly, as McNeill lay mortally wounded, Vargas then prevented his wife from summoning help. Vargas later told police that Darnell McNeill sexually molested him since childhood and well into his adult years. Vargas decided on that day to stop him. Why then? Why this? A divided town showed surprising support to Vargas when locals repeatedly emerged to say that they, too, had been abused by McNeill.
Dr. Welner explains to ABC’s Chris Cuomo how McNeill’s modus operandi distinguished from pedophiles, and how this sexual predator evaded detection despite victimizing in plain sight. The two discuss victim selection, a psychological hold, and those ripe for victimization and why. This 20/20 reviews the justice, psychological, and forensic angles of a tragedy affording a unique window to understanding sadism and in a way few see.
